Crappie Fishing Has Become More Visual
Crappie fishing used to mean finding brush piles, dropping a jig, and hoping fish were nearby. Forward-facing sonar has changed that.
When I’m targeting crappies around brush, standing timber, or suspended schools, I usually pair my electronics with a Jenseits 7-foot Medium Heavy two-piece spinning rod. without driving directly over them.

Fish the Future, Not the Past
One of the biggest advantages of forward-facing sonar is that anglers can target water before the boat reaches it.
Instead of seeing a fish after passing over it, you can identify a crappie suspended on an isolated tree 50 or 70 feet ahead and cast directly toward that target.
This becomes especially valuable in clear water.
Crappies can react to boat noise, trolling motors, shadows, and hull slap. Staying farther away reduces disturbance and allows a more natural presentation.
A longer spinning rod helps here. A 7-foot rod gives me enough casting distance to reach fish without moving directly over their holding area.

Look Deeper Than You Expect
One lesson from modern electronics is that crappies can spend much more time in deep water than many anglers once assumed.
Fish may suspend around standing timber, channel edges, or open-water structure well below traditional shallow crappie zones.
On deep reservoirs such as Table Rock Lake, anglers have documented crappies around timber in 40 to 70 feet of water during colder periods.
That doesn't mean every crappie is deep. It means anglers shouldn't assume shallow cover is always the answer.
Electronics allow you to test that assumption quickly.

Learn to Identify Crappies on the Screen
Seeing fish is only part of the skill.
Interpreting what you see takes practice.
Crappies often appear differently depending on:
- Distance from the transducer
- Depth
- Sonar angle
- School density
- Fish orientation
Spend time observing known crappies and compare them with bass, baitfish, and other species.
Over time, you begin recognizing patterns.
This is similar to learning structure on traditional sonar: screen time becomes experience.
Adjust Your Sonar to the Water You're Fishing
There is no universal perfect setting.
Garmin's 2026 guidance emphasizes that LiveScope performance depends on equipment configuration, viewing mode, fishing depth, and how the system is being used.
Experiment with:
- Gain
- Range
- Color palette
- Depth range
- Transducer direction
The goal isn't to make the screen look pretty.
The goal is to clearly identify:
Fish + structure + lure
without excessive clutter.
Use Casting Distance to Avoid Spooking Fish
Once you locate a fish, don't automatically move closer.
Clear-water crappies can be surprisingly sensitive.
A fish sitting 70 feet ahead may remain relaxed, while the same fish might move if you position the boat directly above it.

As electronics continue to improve, understanding how to use them responsibly and efficiently is becoming another core fishing skill.
